How To Style and Care for a Hermes Scarf

In any wardrobe, the Hermes scarf is a must-have. The first Hermes scarf was originally designed in 1937 by Robert Dumas, a member of the Hermes family. Dumas created the colorful patterned scarf using a woodblock. Catching the eye of Paris’ high society it didn’t take long before the scarf became the must have accessory. To this day, the accessory is still a must have and is frequently purchased not only to be fashionable but also as an investment.

Hermes scarves are made from silk of extraordinary quality, but their main feature is their flexibility. The scarf is versatile and can be worn either dressed up or down, around your neck, over your hair, or even on your designer handbag. The scarf, made of 100% silk, is loomed in-house. These scarves are crafted from wool, cashmere, or silk, but they are never made from polyester due to the fabrics tendency to deform. This is important to keep in mind when you want to make sure you are purchasing an authentic scarf.

The scarves are a true luxury with prices ranging from less than $200 for the nano or the twilly scarves to prices in the upper thousands, depending on the size and pattern. If a scarf is rare and a design is only offered one time, the value of the scarf increases. The more popular patterns are frequently re-released, therefore you can find them at a more reasonable price.

Popular Styles of the Hermes Scarf

  • The Twilly - originally introduced in the late 1930s, the Hermes Twilly has been available in an endless number of designs ever since. Twillys measure 31x22 inches and are made of silk. The twilly was named that because it comes from a weaving technique, known as twill. The price of the twilly begins at less than $200.
  • Cashmere Silk - cashmere silk is a blend of cashmere and silk that is lighter than pure cashmere garments. The variety is so vast that this is frequently sold as a unisex scarf. Your significant other no longer needs to be jealous of your fashion sense and can wear a Hermes. If you really want to have some fun, you can wear matching scarves.
  • Nano Scarf - you can’t help but fall in love with the mini version of the Hermes scarf. The craftsmanship is the same, just a bit smaller. While the scarf is too small to be worn around your neck, it can be tied around your wrist or ankle. It can even be tied to the strap of your pocketbook.

How to Style and Care for the Hermes Scarf:

Style:

Besides wrapping the scarf around your neck, there are a number of different ways to wear the Hermes scarf.

  • As a belt - the scarf comes in a number of sizes. The longest scarf can be worn as a belt.
  • As a headband - go retro by tying the scarf around your head and using it as a headband.
  • Loose knot - tie the scarf loosely around your neck, allowing for breathing room.

Hermes scarves are beautiful, expensive and frequently collectible. This makes choosing your first scarf a bit  challenging. While we would normally recommend a neutral color, Hermes is known for their bright colorful scarves. With this in mind, we would suggest a review of your closet. The color you tend to lean towards should match the scarf you choose. This way you can be sure to wear it frequently.

Care:

While caring for the Hermes scarf is not difficult, it is something to be mindful of in order to ensure it lasts for generations to come. Researching the internet and speaking to my own dry cleaner I have some helpful tips for caring for your luxury accessory.

  • Avoid spraying perfumes or hairspray on the scarf as it can cause discoloration of the fabric.
  • Avoid moisture. If it does get wet due to rain, be sure to lay the scarf flat so that it dries out as soon as possible.
  • Do not use scarf rings or put anything on the scarf as it can ruin the fabric.
  • Lay flat after wearing - to “air” it out.
  • Bring it to the dry cleaner as needed. DO NOT hand wash. You will destroy the scarf.

While you should definitely take care of the scarf, remember to enjoy it and wear it as often as you can. There is no point in owning a beauty treasure like a Hermes scarf if you are going to keep it in your drawer to only wear on a special occasion.
